My experience is similar to yours. My guess is that there is a ton of interference from power lines and all the other electronic stuff that is in suburban areas. My flight time was increased greatly when I flew over the water with zero interference.

The range is sick when there is minimal interference! If there was a battery with more juice I can only do imagine how much further it could go!

Root your tablet (go to XDA Developers to find out how) and install a slimmed down rom that has all the unnecessary crap taken out. I personally root all my android devices and uninstall a bunch of stuff.
