I use a lanyard from the college I went to. It has one of those keychain like connections, so I just screwed it onto the holder on the RC. I don't use a balancer and I have no complaints.
Yeah, I'm going use some silicone tubing to protect the motor wires.... regardless of which ESCs I might have.

Ah ok... I see :-) Thanks!
Here is 3 feet of tubing on amazon for only $5! And Amazon Prime :-) I think I'll just spend $5 and use this stuff... incompatible ESC/motors or not.

Is silicone fuel tubing the same thing as 'heat shrink'? I have some of that (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FI ... UTF8&psc=1) I haven't opened my Phantom (will tonight) but I would rather not desolder for the paranoia of warranty issues. So I would probably try the slicing of the tubing.

Trees can be scary :-)
I know your post is about the GPS losing link, but if this is the regular place you take off/land, I would recommend training in ATTI to get the hang of its characteristics in this area. Build your confidence without GPS to fly in emergency situations.
