Actually, I think the stick self-centers to support mode 1 and mode 2 not for any better reason. To my knowledge nobody flys R/C aircraft with a self centering throttle stick!

I have the Nexus 7 (2012) working with DJI Pilot. It took a few steps but so far (only a couple of flights) it is working well. Reply back and I will detail the steps followed.
I would expect the Nexus 9 to be an excellent. I am using a Nexus 7 (first generation). Just a couple of flights so far but it has been working well. While the Nexus 7 (first generation) is not officially supported, it took a couple of tricks to get it to install the DJI Pilot application.
