When reinforcing the landing gear, keep in mind that the present gear absorbs the shock of hard landings and will break before the body of the Phantom. A stiff, strong gear will transfer all of the shock to the body of your Phantom.
Was your antenna pointed in the proper direction? The antenna gain is off the side of the antenna. If your antenna was oriented up, you lost signal because the antenna gain is horizontal. When flying overhead you must position the controller/antenna so that the side of the antenna is pointed...

I have flown my P2F several times over water using "noodle" floats. In mild winds, there is not much performance degradation in performance. The floats do show up in the photos.
No solar cell will meet the Phantom lift weight capability and provide useful improvement in flight time. The 20 watt unit is too heavy and too large. The smallest is a 10 watt unit weighing 6/10th of a kilogram and only produces 0.53 amp under ideal condition. It is 18"x7.4"x1"thick, too...
