I had this same issue and it was because of the trees. I took it to an open field, re-calibrated everything and it was solid as a rock.

Coming back faster actually uses more battery. The motors and props have to spin faster which in turn uses more battery power so I don't quite follow your logic. The intelligent battery is already doing calculations internally to know how far you are and how much battery is required to return...
