I apologise in advance for this novice question, but I have searched in vain for a clear and concise description of precisely what the two (S1 and S2) switches do in their respective positions.

Why on earth should you not charge the main batteries to 100℅? If you don't, you will never get full flying time. I understand that it is only when you wish to store your batteries for some time that you need to leave them with a 50℅ charge.
