It worked at a Best Buy for me also. We tried at target and they said no. I only wanted for a spare anyways. I was shocked it worked and manager was not happy. Lol
I was actually curious about that too. I have not pushed stick all the way down until it locks when dropping down to land. I figured it wouldn't turn motors off since the action to turn motors off is both sticks diagonally down.

The phantom will set a homepoint on takeoff. If you do not have a gps tablet, you can't change that homepoint. It all depends on how much money you want to invest really. I have p3s and non gps tablet. And I am content with what it can do. I like the point of interest mode and course...
It refers to 400 feet above ground level. You can fly 400 feet above a structure as long as that is the structure you intend to observe.
