Art in the Texas Hill Country

(Note - skip to the last video to get right to it...) I've been documenting the construction of a permanent art installation in the Texas HIll Country (something you can see here, WITHOUT any Phantom footage - https://vimeo.com/68216698). In fact you can see how the installation destroyed my...

    How I Destroyed My Phantom

The real question here is: to replace or to upgrade (F550) I was trying to get shots of an art installation in the Texas Hill Country. I did a test pass and set up for a second run. The idea was to pass over the grass, increase altitude, and then pass over the installation. As the quadcopter...

    New Texas Laws

It's my understanding that to use an UAV for business is illegal right now any ways until the FAA figures out that can of worms. So I think you've already got one strike against you ;) But I see very little issue with this. As I said before, you can't walk onto my lawn and film me with a...

    New Texas Laws

The key here is private property. Take the drone out of it. If you are on my property and you pull out a camera and I say "stop" you have to stop. Why should that be any different from the air? I think in the long run this actually helps protect our rights in terms of flying in public areas. It...

Carbon fiber 9in phantom props from DSLRpros

Re: DJI 9in phantom carbon fiber props DSLRpros Here is what my receipt from DSLR Pros says: 1 DSLRPros 100% Carbon Fiber propellor with drag reducing curved... SKU:DSLRPROS-CFPROP-9-4-s-tip I suspect they had an order that has since sold out. So yes, I have used these props...

Carbon fiber 9in phantom props from DSLRpros

Re: DJI 9in phantom carbon fiber props DSLRpros I used these and after one tip over upon landing on a rocky trail, they were beat up quite a bit. They're strong but brittle. Also, if you balance props through sanding, I would recommend not doing that with these. Sanding carbon fiber is not fun...

Very Low Pass in the flowers :)

Sweet location. Do you have a lot of stabilization in post? Looks like there's something weird going on there.

    What are your GoPro settings?

I almost always shoot at 1080p60 Narrow because I hate the barrel distortion of medium and wide. I then change the settings in the edit software to playback at 1080p24 and I get a nice smooth playback. https://vimeo.com/65010723

    Phantom Gain Settings

Does anyone have the gain settings that the Phantom ships with? Factory reset takes you to another place. I changed mine initially for carbon fiber props (which I have since decided are overkill) and I'd like to return to "normal" settings. (and yes I know I should have recorded these).

    "Catching" a Phantom

A question: I am using a nomojello connector and a ND filter that really makes the GoPro drop below the landing skids. I know that some people have used either swim noodles or pipe insulation to raise up the Phantom and others have rigged up new legs. I'm trying to avoid adding more stuff to my...

    Video editing software

Depends on OS and price. I used to use Final Cut but switched to Premiere when Apple introduced FCPX. If on a Mac I would probably start with iMovie and move my way up to FCPX.

Show off your CUSTOM, MODIFIED, TRICKED OUT Phantoms

unless I filmed at 2.7K I would not crop in post. You are loosing resolution that way.

Getting a GoPro 3, but worried about WiFi

Weird. I haven't had that issue, mind you I don't carry the remote around with me. in fact I've never used it. So perhaps the answer is just leave the remote at home. The other thing is, have you turned off the WiFi through the settings menu as opposed to with the WiFi button? I think there are...

Show off your CUSTOM, MODIFIED, TRICKED OUT Phantoms

You could set your GoPro to medium or narrow to frame out the landing gear (I also thinks this looks a lot better because you don't get the barrel distortion of the lens - but it requires smoother flying)
