That would make sense - your magnetic declination is only 4 degrees East of North. (I'm envious of those Brits who are at 2 degrees West of North - no real declination to speak of!
Also note that Colin is likely flying in Austin - with 5 degrees of magnetic declination his Phantom will fly a lot more true than the drift-left or drift-right we experience out here on the coasts...
Northern California, 38.5N -122.7W, +14 degrees declination
Have had this problem out of the box; participated in previous threads about the issue. Returned the P2V to DroneFly for repair (figuring it was a mis-alignment of some sort) but they returned it in the exact same condition.
Flight...
Decreased range with Dronexpert gimbal?
The weather finally cleared up so I got a good chance to really exercise the newly installed gimbal - won't even bother posting any of the videos since they're mainly flight exercises - nothing close to pretty. It is sooooo nice to be able to maneuver...
The number of "flyaway" and "battery failure" threads on this board ought to be enough to convince any responsible person that flying in a populated area is risky bordering on dangerous. I don't buy for a minute the argument that "I'm in complete control of my craft" because there's always the...
Re: Dronexpert gimbal + filter adapter
I've been thinking about this - I've still got three weeks 'til my DE gimbal arrives so there's plenty of time for navel gazing and back-of-envelope calculations. The problem doesn't seem to be weight as much as balance - right now the DE rig is set up...
Found that one earlier today while searching YouTube for more Dronexpert footage... He's really slewing hard towards the end but the image is still flat and stable. The one thing I'm really liking from these videos is no matter how hard you're maneuvering the horizon stays, well, horizontal.
Don't worry about flyaway / unexpected return to home, the problem doesn't seem to be in your R/C channel. Keep in mind that you have two, essentially separate, radio connections going on between you and the Phantom Vision. One is the 5.8GHz radio control channel between the controller and the...
I've still got my circular polarizer from the days when I used to shoot 35mm film (okay, so that dates me just a bit) and I'm very interested to see how well it behaves on a moving camera.
When you're using a CPF on a handheld camera you generally "tune" the angle of the filter for each shot...
Here's my DIY filter mount:
The glue is a bit ragged looking (hard to smooth silicone caulk) but it's unlikely to break off and affect the image.
The adapter weights 6 grams, UV filter is 10g and the circular polarizing filter is 15g for a flying weight of 16g or 21g. Total cost $18...
Last night I took a more DIY approach and glued a 40.5mm to 52mm step-up adapter to the front of the camera ($3.99 from Amazon). I used a thin bead of clear silicone adhesive around the rim of the adapter which holds very nicely but could be cut away with an Exacto blade if needed. Now I've...
For the most part I'm in the "happy owner" camp as well. Flights have always been stable and easy to control, battery life has been excellent and my camera seems to be better than most. I did send mine back to DroneFly for repair (that all-too common "drifting left" syndrome) and they either...
Am I the only one amazed that the gimbal traveled from Netherlands to Texas in just three days!?!? At least when they tell you "it's shipped" you won't have long to wait :-)
For some reason I'm reminded of Louis CK's observation that "Everything's amazing and nobody's happy"...
I measured mine to drift left at more than 20 degrees, has behaved that way since the first flight. Multiple calibrations of the IMU and compass have had no effect. The P2V is currently back at Dronefly for repair or replacement.
