    What's wrong with my Phantom?

Sounds like a bad esc. FYI, the motors do beep... That's what makes the beeping noise when you plug the battery in. The same as the alarm in your wristwatch is just a metal spring.

My fly-away story (FPV transmitter caused?)

What naza firmware were you on? Good detail in the story, might be worth telling DJI about it just in case.

    my first crash: hard, wet!

Haha. Also handy for generally checking the voltage levels of batteries on the field. :)

Get yourself one of these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=18987 They are LOUD. :)

What's the purpose of a Gimbal?

From your video, it seems your gimbal wasn't actually doing much at all to compensate the tilting of the Phantom. I have a cheap (sub £100) self built brushless motor gimbal and made this on the weekend: https://vimeo.com/67457609 I'm still not 100% happy with mine, but its getting there.

another X1 pitch control lever from shapeways (affordable)

Re: another X1 pitch control lever from shapeways (affordabl Been using mine happily for a week now. :)

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

I use the Open Source Brushless Gimbal Controller software here: http://code.google.com/p/brushless-gimbal/downloads/list I'm using 049r45. It's only "easy" to install/tune if you're proficient at DSP (understanding filter resonance), but it's not too difficult so long as you take your time...

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

OK I've updated to the new firmware on the Martinez V3 board and it's looking a lot better now: https://vimeo.com/67457609 Still more work to do, but getting there... :)

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

OK we had a break in the clouds/wind/rain yesterday so I popped out to test my latest tuning... http://youtu.be/qq-12o0h3mA Still a little bit of vibration in the pitch if you look at the fine detail (leaves in trees etc) and both axis don't quite stay perfectly horizontal, but it's getting to...

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

OK, finally got a chance to take it out for a brief test flight earlier. It was quite windy so I kept it low and on GPS mode so there's a bit of movement (yaw) from that. http://youtu.be/F_J10ynyFyU Still not quite there yet, but it's a start!

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

Well it looks like the wind is calming down for tomorrow so I should have some test footage for everyone to laugh at then :) I linked the eBay page I got mine from in the 1st post of this thread. :)

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

Ah you lucky thing!! :D Thanks for the offer, that's very kind! Unfortunately, the way I understand it from my electrical engineering days, all settings will be different on every gimbal, due to tiny differences in the magnetic force of each motor winding, and even the lengths and thicknesses...

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

Okaaaayyyyy... I've now finally narrowed it down to an approximate group of numbers in the DSP software, and I've managed to do a little test flight. The gimbal still pitches and rolls a few degrees, but it's at least working to some extent, without twitching and spazzing out all over the shop...

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

A day later, and I'm still trying to PID tune the gimbal... It's basically just nonsense, and I'm on the verge of giving up. :/ There's only so much time I can spend going round in circles before it becomes completely uneconomical.

My 2208 DD Brushless gimbal kit

Breakthrough! I've got the basic figures worked out now... Attached the gimbal to the Phantom (only to find out my cable sockets are a little too long and stick out further than the landing legs!). Next step is to feed the power from the phantoms 12v cable, then give it a test flight and fine...
