I'm just a newby myself, but I believe that you should turn on the controller first, then connect the battery and wait while the drone completes its startup procedure. Then do the calibration dance and you'll be ready to fly.
I'm brand new to flying quadcopters, and so that I don't destroy my drone, I have fitted prop guards. As these are a permanent fixture (eight screws to attach) the cases advertised for the Phantom are too small. Is there a case available which would take the Phantom with prop guards fitted? ...
