...after being laid off from a 20yr career in corporate America, I decided I was through working for "the man". I was through busting my butt to make somebody else rich, while struggling to "get by". I've always been into RC vehicles growing up, whether it was cars, helicopters, planes or the original Estes rockets....it was always something I enjoyed doing. While I lost interest over the years, once quadcopters really started gaining popularity 4-5 years ago, I started following the scene once again. I started out with an inexpensive Syma X5, graduated to the X8HC (which was actually a blast to fly), and eventually picked up the Phantom 3 Professional, which I used to start my company DroneWolf Media LLC. I passed my 107 test, as well as a separate airspace test from the FAA and I hit the ground running. My first paying gig was with NBC/Universal of all companies! They saw my "downtown Idaho Falls" video on YouTube and contacted me to see if they could license the footage. After some tough negotiating, I ended up selling them quite a few clips which showcased my town, Idaho Falls. They used my footage for a documentary on their Investigation Discovery channel, which is an offshoot of the Discovery Channel. Dateline's very own Keith Morrison created this documentary called, "Who Killed Angie Dodge" which aired this past May 29th. You can re-watch it via the Investigation Discovery channels website, if you have cable or satellite. Or by downloading their free Investigation Discovery app, and searching for the title. I filmed every aerial clip in this documentary except for two night time shots at right around the 10 min mark.
From there I've worked for a number of realtors, general contractors and businesses in the area. While it's still difficult not having a steady paycheck, and working 12-14 hour days, I couldn't be happier and I wouldn't change a thing. I only wish more people would follow their dreams. The old saying, "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life" couldn't be more true! Sure, we all need money to survive to take care of ourselves and our families, but at what cost? I busted my butt for 20 years and always told myself that once I was manager I'd be happy, once I started making 6 figures I'd be happy, once I could afford that fancy car or nice house that I'd be happy. But after reaching all of those goals, I still wasn't happy. It took me 35 plus years of working for somebody else and then finally being laid off after 20, (of what I thought was a secure job), only to have them call me back 4 months later offering me my same position back at a much smaller wage......only then did I come to the realization that "having a job" wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Money and material possessions won't bring you happiness. A nice car, big house, fancy boat, motorcycles, jetskis, exotic vacations.....NONE of that "stuff" will make you happy, trust me! Talk to anybody that has made it big and they'll all tell you the same thing. The only ones who actually believe this, are those that don't have any or have ever been there. (and the media of course....they want you to believe money will solve your problems because they want you consuming more) Being your own boss and doing what you love, is what will create a fulfilling and happy life.
So don't get caught up in the hype that you need to be a good little "soldier/sheep/lemming" and work your 9-5 job and take bullsh!t from your boss or your co-workers. Break that cycle and take control of your own destiny. Make your own mark on happiness. It doesn't have to be aerial photography, it just has to be something you're truly passionate about.
    Good luck!
