    Hand Held Radios

Before and during flights, I carry a hand-held scanner that receives multiple aircraft channels and also the local EMS dispatch and communication channels. Our local LifeFlight helicopter rescue service is dispatched and communicates with local EMS personnel during their flights on the EMS radio...

Did some flying, dodged a couple of low fliers

I carry a scanner that covers aviation and public service. Our LifeFlight EMS Helo's are dispatched over public service, EMS and other Helo's are usually checking with area ATC's and towers on one or another Unicom frequencies. Nothing compares to using ears and listening for approaching aircraft.

    New Drone Law

Thank everyone for your input. Cooperstown does try and be welcoming to our visitors and our local Village Board is primarily concerned with their safety. I have appeared before the Board, circulated information and generally have tried to provide input to their decision-making. They do have the...

    New Drone Law

Yes, prohibiting operations from their property is within Zoning Law capabilities. What do you think of their prohibiting operations within 1 mile and 2 hours before and after any "special event?"

    New Drone Law

They asked the FAA about NFZ and were told "only if the President visits."

    FAA Registration and Rules

Hi everyone. I haven't bought a drone in a while, my P4 hit my checkbook pretty hard. Do new purchases include information for US users that they have to register their drone? Does the manual talk about current FAA regulations? Any input appreciated. Thanks.

    New Drone Law

Thank you for the good points. I mentioned to the Board at their public hearing that this will only have an effect on knowledgeable (Part 107 and responsible hobby fliers) and have no effect on the guy who buys his drone in a drugstore and then takes to the air. How wold that person be aware of...

    New Drone Law

Thank everyone for this discussion. Cooperstown has a large public image and many of their strict zoning and other regulations have been copied by other municipalities, so this is important to try and get right the first time.

    New Drone Law

Good points and thank you for your input. They held a public hearing and interestingly enough when I informed them of FAA regulations prohibiting flights over people, i.e. large gatherings, it looked like deer caught in the headlights. One Board member is a pilot and he is a voice of reason but...

    New Drone Law

The proposed law (available on the Village of Cooperstown NY website) actually does not specifically address privacy. Their immediate concern is public safety in light of recent terrorist activity. Now the Village (1800 pop.) has to lock the public garbage cans!

Thank you for your interest. Do you personally know of any other examples? How did they address signage?

    New Drone Law

Cooperstown is home to the Annual Baseball Hall of Fame Induction that draws between 25,000 to an estimated for the Derrick Jeter induction of over 100,000. Plus the Hall of Fame draws about 350,000 visitors each year. Village officials want local control.

    New Drone Law

Hi everyone, Our Village Board is proposing a new drone law that prohibits take offs/landings and any control of a drone from all Village property. This means parks, streets, sidewalks etc. They also propose a 1 mile complete prohibition around any designated “special events” of 200 people or...

How is it that the drone signals can go for miles while my wifi cant even get to my next room?

One factor complicating range is what is commonly called the "signal to noise ratio." This basically means; can I hear the signal I want over the background noise? The specific frequency on which the controller operates does not have any other signals on the same unique frequency nor is there...
