According to the pictures there are 2 usb ports , one on the left side where you connect the included mini usb to mini usb or lighting connector to connect your phone and charge the remote (clearly detailed in the pictures) and then there is the center usb connector, what is this used for?

Yes I did , there isn't a default password it should access with an empty password with the user root until you set the password via CLI and telnet but of course DJI set that password.

Are you Flying on GPS mode ? if you actually on GPS mode Check the IMU Calibration on the software assistant also do a compass calibration

Some users use electrical tape or masking tape on the LEDs to avoid interfering with the camera at night , you could try that ;)

I got mine the first week of January , so I'm guessing we all got the same version(1.4) but with different pin Versions, I think DJI started to change the Pins when the battery problem appeared within the same version and they didn't update it

The pins on the newer versions are like a "crown style" instead of the rounded pins of the first version ,the new form of the pins in theory will not give the battery error
