An electric kitchen knife (used for slicing meat) with reciprocating, serrated blades works great. It also works well for getting smooth cuts on just about any kind of foam (memory foam, styrofoam, etc.)

The safest way to always shut down, regardless of mode, is to move only the throttle stick straight down and hold for about 3 or 4 seconds. No surge, no tip over. Only use the CSC to start up.

You could try googling "high density polyethylene foam". I found a local packing/shipping company that sells a 1" thick 4'x8' sheet for $45.
